WATERCOLOR

"In the early stages of her pregnancy,  my mother enrolled in a watercolor painting class.  Sometimes, when I helped clean the garage, I'd come across some of her paintings. But it wasn't until I was older that I really took the time to look at them.

 

Most of them were still life paintings of fruit bowls. Clearly the class instructor was really into watermelons, both whole and sliced. And here's the thing: every single painting had the objects outlined.

 

At first, I didn't think much of it. But then I realized something—I sometimes outline objects just like she did! Without realizing, I had adopted her style on some of my early illustrations!”
